Pekin Duck

Pekin Duck

The Pekin Duck is the most popular domestic duck breed, cherished for its friendly nature and iconic appearance.

History & Origin

Originating in China, the Pekin duck was first imported to the United States and Great Britain in the late 19th century. In the U.S., it was further refined into the “American Pekin,” which became the standard for domestic duck breeds due to its fast growth and utility. It has since become the most widely raised domestic duck in the world.

Temperament & Behavior

Pekins are known for being extremely friendly, docile, and calm. They are often described as one of the most companionable of all duck breeds, making them excellent choices for families and small farms. They are relatively active and enjoy foraging in ponds or gardens, yet they are much less flighty than smaller, more energetic breeds.

What Makes Them Special?

Their iconic bright white plumage, orange bill, and upright stance make them the quintessential “farm duck.” They are exceptionally hardy and adaptable, thriving in various climates. Their large size and gentle nature make them as much a pet as a productive farm animal, standing out in any flock with their classic and cheerful presence.

Egg & Utility Facts

While highly valued for their utility, Pekins are also prolific layers, producing between 150 and 200 large white eggs per year. They are known for their rapid growth rate and efficiency, making them a reliable choice for sustainable farming. They maintain consistent productivity throughout the seasons and are well-regarded for their all-round hardiness.
