History & Origin

The Orpington was developed by William Cook in Orpington, Kent, England, in 1886. His goal was to develop a bird that was both a good layer and a respectable meat bird, while also having a calm and attractive presence. The breed was quickly embraced by poultry keepers across England and the United States and has since become one of the most popular heritage breeds.

Orpingtons are famous for being “lap chickens” and extremely docile and “fluffy” (cuddly). They are incredibly calm and heavy, which makes them easy to handle even for children. They make excellent broody mothers and are known for their strong brooding instinct, often happily raising chicks of their own or other breeds.
