Australorp

Australorp

The Australorp is Australia’s national chicken breed and a world-renowned layer. Combining high productivity with a calm and friendly temperament (great layers), they are a staple of many successful backyard flocks.

History & Origin

The Australorp was developed in Australia in the early 20th century, specifically between 1890 and 1920. The breed was derived from Black Orpingtons imported from England, which were then crossed with other breeds to improve their egg-laying capabilities. The result was a bird that could produce an incredible number of eggs while still maintaining a robust body size for meat.

Temperament & Behavior

Australorps are known for being exceptionally calm and friendly (great layers). They are easy to handle and generally get along well with other chickens, making them a peaceful addition to any mixed flock. While they are more than happy to forage in an open paddock, they also handle confinement remarkably well, as long as they have enough space to remain active.

What Makes Them Special?

The Australorp is famous for being world-record holders for egg production (up to 300+ eggs)—one hen famously laid 364 eggs in 365 days! Beyond their productivity, they are stunning to look at, especially the black variety which features iridescent black feathers with a deep green sheen that catches the light beautifully. They are the perfect example of form meeting function.

Egg & Utility Facts

As a true utility bird, the Australorp excels in both egg and meat production. Owners can expect upwards of 250 to 300+ large, light brown eggs per year. They are known for their consistent laying even during the winter months when other breeds might take a break. Their heavy, well-fleshed body also makes them a respectable choice for those looking for a meat bird.
